SmartShelf Price Index · 16 everyday staples priced across all 7 supermarkets · updated 15 August 2026
How the Price Index Works
What's in the basket?
16 everyday staples (milk, eggs, bread, cheese, chicken, pasta, rice, fruit & veg and more). For each staple we take every supermarket's cheapest option by price per unit, and only count staples all seven stores stock — so it's a like-for-like comparison.
How is the total worked out?
Each staple is costed at a standard quantity (e.g. 2 litres of milk, 6 eggs) using that store's cheapest price per unit, then summed into a basket total. Obvious mis-priced outliers are filtered so a stray listing can't skew a store's result. Prices refresh daily.
Disclaimer: based on the seven supermarkets SmartShelf tracks — Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda, Morrisons, Waitrose, Aldi and M&S. It does not include Lidl (which doesn't publish prices online), Co-op, Iceland or other retailers. Prices change frequently and are refreshed daily, so the ranking can shift. Figures reflect a basket of everyday staples ranked by price per unit — a guide, not a full weekly shop, and not affiliated with or endorsed by any retailer.
